Training and Development Opportunities
The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC) Training Department offers educational courses including new employee training, management skills, communication skills and computer software training.  Our training team works with employees to ensure they are using the most effective and efficient methods to serve our members.

Growth Opportunities
After employees have been with Blue KC for 12 months, they have the chance to review our internal opportunities. We believe in our employees and want to make sure they stay challenged during their time with us. The only way to do that is to offer continuous growth opportunities within our organization.

Volunteerism
Blue KC employees are committed to helping serve the community.  We’re proud of our employees who donate personal time to their favorite causes.  Blue KC employees volunteer to enhance the quality of life and well being of the families who live and work in the communities we serve through charitable contributions, volunteer assistance and in-kind donations to non-profit organizations in our area.  We help more than 30 child-focused and community organizations, including The Caring Program for Children and the James School and Youth Friends.

Employee Engagement
Employees at Blue KC know the mission of the company, the goals and objectives, and they believe in them.  Each employee understands how they contribute to the success of the company.  Our President and CEO Communication is a top priority. That’s why the CEO meets with employees quarterly to share the company’s performance. Our Diversity Council and Cross-N-Shield Club (an organization focused on recreational and social benefits for employees) are made up of Blue KC employees. Every year, the results of our All Employee Survey exceed external benchmarks for employee commitment compared to other companies within and beyond our immediate industry. Year after year our results continue to improve in every category, such as respect and recognition, development opportunities and pay/benefits.

Employee Investment and Development
At Blue KC we embrace the concept of “managing to strengths*”, a philosophy that focuses on the idea of you succeeding by finding ways to capitalize on who you are, not trying to fix who you aren’t.  We are committed to the personal development of our employees through onsite educational courses like new employee training, management, communication, and computer software skills training.  In 2008, we launched an onsite degree program exclusive to our employees through Bellevue University allowing employees to pursue a master’s degree in healthcare administration onsite after work hours.  Benefits provide 100 percent tuition reimbursement for students who earn excellent grades through Bellevue or any other approved education institution.

Work/Life Balance
The Blue KC culture is committed to balancing work and life priorities by emphasizing the health and wellness of our employees.  Blue KC offers a smoke-free environment, an onsite fitness center with flexible hours, and the A Healthier You program to all employees.  We also have an onsite personal trainer for additional fitness instruction and guidance.  We’re honored to sponsor employees in fitness related events like the Kansas City Corporate Challenge and other runs and walks in the community.  Blue KC is proud to have been nominated by the American Heart Association’s Start Movement and is the only Kansas City company awarded the Platinum level. We’ve also earned the Gold designation as one of America’s Healthiest Companies by the Wellness Councils of America for our commitment to our employees’ health and wellness.
