Getting Involved in the Communities We Serve — It’s All Part of the Blue KC Commitment.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC) is committed to improving the health and wellness of the individuals and families living and working in the communities that we serve. We fulfill that mission through charitable contributions, volunteer assistance, in-kind donations, and by offering a special program that supports children’s health.

Charitable contributions.

Our focus is on preventive healthcare, improved access to services, promoting healthy lifestyles for Kansas City area individuals and families, children’s health, education, and civic and cultural programs

We support the Arts Council of Greater Kansas City through donations to the ArtsKC Fund. In 2009, we raised more than $25,000 for the Fund.  For the second consecutive year, the Kansas City Arts Council awarded Blue KC its Workplace Giving Award for raising the most money by a company our size

Through our community investments program, we have made more than $3 million in donations to a broad range of worthwhile causes and non-profit endeavors in 2008. This program is one of the largest company-funded gifting programs of its kind in the Midwest

We donated $375,000 in 2008 to area schools and local allied health institutions to help educators better serve their students

In 2009, we donated $25,000 per school to three medical schools in the city to help promote medical education

We continue to support five major safety-net clinics that provide care for the uninsured. Clinics that received a contribution of $25,000 each from Blue KC in 2008 include: the Kansas City Free Health Clinic; Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center; Cabot Westside Health Center; Jackson County Free Health Clinic; and the Turner House Children’s Clinic

Volunteer assistance.

Our employees share their time and talents to help organizations, such as Angel Flight, Ronald McDonald House, Horizon Academy, the ALS Association, the American Heart Association and Kansas City Public Television, to name a few

Employees also participate in the United Way campaign each year. In 2009, our employees raised more than $230,000 — exceeding our goal and beating our total in 2008 when we raised more than $225,000

Special Program Supporting Children's Health
We started The Caring Program for Children as a health insurance program for children whose families did not qualify for Medicaid and could not afford the cost of private health insurance. The program also provides durable medical equipment and other health-related items to families who otherwise could not afford equipment and are not covered by state or federal programs or private insurance. Learn more about our Caring Program.

Partnering to Promote Physical Activity in Children
We are a proud supporter of PE4life, a program dedicating to instilling health and physical activity in children through their school physical education program.   Kids involved in the program are exposed to fitness activities and wellness education.  Children who participate in PE4life typically see an increase in fitness levels and improvements in their academic performance.  Learn more about Blue KC’s partnership with PE4life.

In-kind donations.

We offer a matching gift program in which employees recommend a charity or cause of their choice to donate to, and Blue KC matches their donations
