Many national\norganizations such as NAMI, Mental Health America, and other affiliates\nspotlight Mental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of mental\nhealth and to stop the stigma associated with mental health disorders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Centers for Disease\nControl and Prevention, mental illnesses are among the most common health\nconditions in the United States. More than 50% of Americans will be diagnosed\nwith a mental illness or disorder at some point in their lifetimes. 1 in 5\nAmericans will experience a mental illness in a given year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having poor mental health increases the risk of developing other chronic conditions such as heart disease, stroke, or cancer. So, it\u2019s important to recognize the significant role that mental health plays in our physical and overall health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mental health during COVID-19 <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation\nshows the psychological toll the pandemic is taking on Americans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the survey results published\nApril 2, 45\u2009percent of adults (53% of women and 37% of men) say the pandemic\nhas affected their mental health, and 19 percent say it has had a \u201cmajor\nimpact.\u201d The rates are slightly higher among women, Hispanic adults and black\nadults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lengthy periods of isolation and social\ndistancing are leading to increased feelings of anxiety, depression &nbsp;and stress. Many people are overwhelmed by the\nfear of getting sick or coping with loved ones who\u2019ve contracted the virus.\nMany people are burdened by job loss or the fear of unemployment. And because\nno one knows when life will return to normal, we\u2019re all facing uncertainty that\ntriggers stress and anxiety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, more than ever, it\u2019s important to look after our mental health.
