The Great American Smokeout is in the air once more. And this November 18, thousands of smokers across America will take the important step towards living smoke-free and reducing their risk of cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The American Cancer Society has hosted the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November for more than 40 years. The event encourages smokers to use this day to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking on that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is this event so important? Although smoking has declined over the past decades, about 34 million Americans still smoke cigarettes. Smoking remains the single largest cause of death and illness in the world, responsible for about one in five deaths every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nicotine in cigarettes is one of the strongest addictions a person can have \u2013 which makes quitting hard, and even seemingly impossible. But a smoker\u2019s chance of success goes up exponentially with the help of support and a plan. With counseling and proven cessation medications, you can double or even triple your chances of quitting for good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
