{"id":2149,"date":"2022-05-09T13:46:38","date_gmt":"2022-05-09T13:46:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bluekc.com\/bluekcblog\/well-said\/happy-and-healthy-may-2022\/"},"modified":"2023-05-18T16:04:43","modified_gmt":"2023-05-18T16:04:43","slug":"happy-and-healthy-may-2022","status":"publish","type":"well_said","link":"https:\/\/www.bluekc.com\/blog\/well-said\/happy-and-healthy-may-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy &#038; Healthy May 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bluekc.com\/bluekcblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/05\/A3_Hero_WellSaid_May22-1024x440-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5135\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With stroke killing nearly 150,000 of the 860,000 Americans who die of cardiovascular disease each year<sup>1<\/sup>, it&#8217;s important to know your risks, know how to recognize signs, and know what lifestyle changes can prevent a stroke from happening in the first place.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A stroke causes brain tissue to die which can lead to damage, disability or even death.\u202fStroke is the leading cause of death in the United States, and\u202fas many as 80% of strokes are preventable.<sup>2<\/sup>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What puts you at risk for a stroke?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone can have a stroke at any time.\u202fEvery year, 800,000 people in the United States have a stroke<sup>3<\/sup>. There are several factors you can control to reduce your risk for a stroke.\u202fThese include reducing alcohol, stop smoking and getting enough exercise.\u202f&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some conditions increase your risk for a stroke. These include diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. You can reduce your risk for a stroke by treating these conditions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the signs and symptoms of a stroke?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The easiest way to remember the common signs of a stroke is remembering how you need to respond:\u202f<strong>FAST!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>F = Facial drooping.\u202fIf you ask the person to smile, do both corners of the mouth turn up?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A = Arm weakness.\u202fCan the person raise both of their arms?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>S = Speech difficulty.\u202fAsk the person to repeat a sentence.\u202fAre the words slurred?\u202fCan they talk?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>T= Time to call 911.\u202fIf a person shows any of the above signs call 911 immediately.\u202fStroke treatment can begin in the ambulance and time is critical for successful treatment of stroke.\u202f&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other common signs of a stroke:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sudden dizziness or trouble walking&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sudden trouble seeing&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Severe headache&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any numbness of the face, arm or leg&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sudden confusion or trouble understanding others&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to prevent a stroke.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>High blood pressure is the most important treatable risk factor for stroke, so be sure to check your blood pressure regularly. If it\u2019s elevated, discuss treatment with your physician.\u202f&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To reduce your risk of stroke:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eat a healthy diet with fruits and vegetables&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain a healthy weight&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be active! Regular exercise reduces your risk&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limit alcohol consumption&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don&#8217;t smoke&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prevent or manage other conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity to reduce your risk&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What factors put you at higher risk for a stroke?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Age \u2013 The older you are, the higher the risk for a stroke.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sex \u2013 Women are more likely to have a stroke and are more likely to die from a stroke.\u202f&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Genetics \u2013 People with a family history of stroke have a higher risk for a stroke.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Race or Ethnicity \u2013 Black, Hispanic, and American Indian people are more likely to have a stroke than Whites, Asians, or non-Hispanics.\u202fBlacks are more likely to die from stroke than Whites.\u202f&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Blue KC Nurse Case Manager is here to help.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Blue KC\u2019s Registered Nurse (RN) Case Managers can help you decrease your risk of stroke and help with any of your chronic conditions.
