{"id":2535,"date":"2023-06-22T13:58:14","date_gmt":"2023-06-22T13:58:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bluekc.com\/blog\/?post_type=well_said&#038;p=2535"},"modified":"2023-06-27T08:56:43","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T08:56:43","slug":"trending-now-june-2023","status":"publish","type":"well_said","link":"https:\/\/www.bluekc.com\/blog\/well-said\/trending-now-june-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Trending Now &#8211; June 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bluekcblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Alzheimer-and-Brain-Awareness-Month-1024x646.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6837\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year, the month of June is dedicated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/abam\/overview.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Alzheimer&#8217;s and Brain Awareness<\/strong><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Alzheimer\u2019s Association<\/strong><\/a>, June is \u201can opportunity to hold a conversation about the brain and share the fact that Alzheimer\u2019s disease and other dementias are a major public health issue. Everyone who has a brain is at risk to develop Alzheimer\u2019s, the only leading cause of death that cannot be prevented, cured, or even slowed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly 55 million people are living with Alzheimer&#8217;s or some form of dementia, and that number is expected to reach 132 million by 2050!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what&#8217;s the difference between Alzheimer\u2019s and dementia?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dementia is a brain condition that affects the part of the brain that controls memory, language, and thoughts.&nbsp;Alzheimer&#8217;s is just one form of dementia.&nbsp;While your risk of Alzheimer&#8217;s increases with age, Alzheimer&#8217;s is not &#8220;normal aging.&#8221; Alzheimer&#8217;s develops most commonly in those over the age of 65, but some younger people can develop it too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symptoms of Alzheimer&#8217;s vary depending on the severity of the disease.&nbsp;The most common early symptom is difficulty remembering NEW information. Alzheimer&#8217;s typically begins in the part of the brain that affects learning.&nbsp;As the disease progresses, symptoms can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mood and behavior changes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty completing familiar tasks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Misplacing or losing items<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Confusion about events, times, and places<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unfounded suspicions about family and friends<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty speaking, walking, and swallowing.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>At this time, there&#8217;s no evidence to suggest dementia can be prevented.&nbsp;There are current studies that suggest certain habits boost your brain health and reduce the risk of cognitive decline.&nbsp;The Alzheimer&#8217;s Association created a list of 10 ways to help your brain health as you age:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\">\n<li>Eat healthy. Eating low-fat foods and lots of fruits and vegetables reduces brain decline.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take care of your heart!&nbsp;Taking care of chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease will also improve your brain and reduce your risk of dementia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get a good night&#8217;s sleep!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exercise regularly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quit smoking.&nbsp;Smoking is strongly associated with dementia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stay social.&nbsp;Find ways to stay engaged that are meaningful and bolster your personal interests.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep an active mind.&nbsp;Play games, do puzzles, crossword puzzles, and other activities that challenge your brain to think more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prevent injury. Make sure you always wear a seatbelt.&nbsp;Wear a helmet while riding a bike.
