With that much face time, you may think you know them intimately. However, your teeth and mouth, just like the rest of your body, are complicated systems. The good news is, caring for them doesn\u2019t have to be complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are the obvious daily duties: Brush twice and floss once. Beyond brushing and flossing, consider these dietary changes to keep your teeth and mouth healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Swap out damaging beverages<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes it\u2019s the unassuming beverages that are some of the biggest offenders in damaging your teeth. This doesn\u2019t mean to deprive yourself of these drinks, just remain mindful of them and their healthy alternatives<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Citrus<\/strong> <strong>water<\/strong> \u2013 Congrats for ditching sugary drinks for citrus water. But beware how much you squeeze into that glass. Citrus can erode enamel, which can make your teeth susceptible to decay. Instead, infuse your water with cucumber and mint, watermelon and basil, or jalapeno and cucumber.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Coffee drinks<\/strong> \u2013 Some flavored lattes or blended coffees can rack up grams of sugar faster than you can properly caffeinate. Replace them with alternatives that are high in flavor and low in sugar, like cold brew with creamy cold foam or a bold espresso macchiato.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Soda<\/strong> \u2013 The carbonation in soda, even diet soda, poses a threat to your teeth due to its enamel-damaging acidity. Good alternatives: infused water, plain water, or unsweetened iced tea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Alcohol<\/strong> \u2013 An occasional drink is an acceptable rule of thumb. But excessive drinking can cause dehydration and dry mouth, which can lead to oral issues like tooth decay and gum disease. Mocktails, alcohol-free beer, and sparkling water with a splash of juice are good swaps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ice<\/strong> \u2013 It\u2019s great for chilling, contains no sugar and, heck, it\u2019s made of water. But chewing it can chip or crack teeth and damage enamel. Break the habit and suck on ice instead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Get your fluoride<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fluoride is a natural, cavity-fighting mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and helps resist decay. It is present in some foods and beverages, is added to some dental products, such as toothpaste, is available as a topical supplement, and is added to tap water in many U.S. communities<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at a short list of foods and beverages with naturally occurring fluoride<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"435\" height=\"265\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bluekc.com\/blueprint\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/07\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10925\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bluekc.com\/blueprint\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/07\/image-1.png 435w, https:\/\/www.bluekc.com\/blueprint\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/07\/image-1-300x183.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">*Amounts of fluoride may vary based on levels in the water used in preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter how you get fluoride, the amount needed to protect your teeth depends on your age, sex, and whether you are pregnant or nursing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"380\" height=\"193\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bluekc.com\/blueprint\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/07\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10926\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bluekc.com\/blueprint\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/07\/image-2.png 380w, https:\/\/www.bluekc.com\/blueprint\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/07\/image-2-300x152.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">The Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talk with your dentist about fluoride and whether you may need a supplement to protect your teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Add and maintain healthy habits<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Making just a few changes \u2013 like the ones above \u2013 to your current routine can bolster your bite. But don\u2019t forget these gold standards<sup>4<\/sup>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Brush for two minutes every time you brush<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Replace your toothbrush every three to four months<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t rinse immediately after brushing to avoid washing away fluoride<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visit the dentist every six months for cleaning and checkup.
