The impact of healthcare fraud is widespread and affects consumers, patients, communities, and businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Between 4 \u201310% of all healthcare expenditures are estimated to be potentially<\/strong> <strong>fraudulent.<\/strong> <strong>This loss directly impacts patients, insurers, and government agencies<\/strong> <strong>through higher healthcare costs.<\/strong> Additionally, healthcare fraud often hurts patients who may be subjected to unnecessary or unsafe procedures or be the victims of identity theft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC) is committed to preventing fraud in our communities, and has a team of experts in our anti-fraud department who work with local, state and federal law enforcement to detect, report and prevent healthcare fraud. That department\u2019s biggest ally in the fight against healthcare fraud is YOU. There are several ways you can protect yourself while helping to curb healthcare fraud:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Safeguard your insurance card<\/strong> by treating it the same as a credit card. Don\u2019t lend your insurance card to others. Doing so is not only potentially criminal, but can also pose a health risk to you through inaccurate medical records.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Beware of \u201cfree\u201d services<\/strong>, especially if you\u2019re asked to provide your insurance card. The service may not be free and could be fraudulently charged to your insurance company.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Closely examine your Explanation of Benefits<\/strong>, or EOB, which you should receive in the mail following a doctor or hospital visit.
