Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S.<sup data-fn=\"64c9369a-d418-4ad5-9afe-82c0c3fe84d7\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#64c9369a-d418-4ad5-9afe-82c0c3fe84d7\" id=\"64c9369a-d418-4ad5-9afe-82c0c3fe84d7-link\">1<\/a><\/sup> The good news: there are ways you can reduce your risk of heart disease starting today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Khushbu Patel, a family practice physician at <a href=\"https:\/\/spiracare.com\/care-centers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spira Care Olathe<\/a>, helps patients evaluate their cardiovascular health and supports them through diagnoses and lifestyle changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who is at risk<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Patel shared there are a few things that put people in danger of developing heart disease, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Smoking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Obesity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Family history<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High blood pressure, blood sugar, and\/or cholesterol<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor diet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sedentary lifestyle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since you might not have symptoms of some risk factors, it\u2019s important to schedule a preventive care visit with your doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou should aim to see your primary care provider at least annually. Regular primary care is important to identify your risk factors, especially risk factors like hypertension and high cholesterol that are typically asymptomatic. It also gives you a chance to build a doctor-patient relationship that can help tailor care to you individually,\u201d Dr. Patel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Women <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluekc.com\/blueprint\/healthier-living\/5-common-health-conditions-that-affect-women-more-than-men\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">face even worse odds<\/a>. Nearly half of women older than 20 have some form of cardiovascular disease,<sup> <\/sup><sup data-fn=\"31215330-d24f-4fa4-b1eb-86b790137e7a\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#31215330-d24f-4fa4-b1eb-86b790137e7a\" id=\"31215330-d24f-4fa4-b1eb-86b790137e7a-link\">2<\/a><\/sup> largely due to increased risk from unique life stages like pregnancy and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluekc.com\/blueprint\/healthier-living\/6-surprising-ways-your-body-changes-after-menopause\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">menopause<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to reduce your risk today<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If any of these risk factors hit a little too close to home, Dr. Patel encourages you to see your primary care doctor, who can help with ways to reduce your risk starting today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some things Dr. Patel suggests to her patients are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Quit smoking or set a quit date:<\/strong> Nearly a third of coronary heart disease deaths are due to smoking and secondhand smoke.<sup data-fn=\"2309acf6-5784-449d-b74a-536983a12f9a\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#2309acf6-5784-449d-b74a-536983a12f9a\" id=\"2309acf6-5784-449d-b74a-536983a12f9a-link\">3<\/a><\/sup> Your risk drops dramatically when you quit \u2013 as much as 50% three to six years after you quit.<sup data-fn=\"e85b6adb-cfc3-4d27-8a9f-eb1c36ef84d4\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#e85b6adb-cfc3-4d27-8a9f-eb1c36ef84d4\" id=\"e85b6adb-cfc3-4d27-8a9f-eb1c36ef84d4-link\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Add daily movement to your routine:<\/strong> Exercise is especially important if you have a sedentary lifestyle like working a desk job. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity, or 75 minutes of rigorous aerobic activity, per week along with at least two days of strength training.<sup data-fn=\"c92198de-d820-4303-a0e4-b73cdd8a9316\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#c92198de-d820-4303-a0e4-b73cdd8a9316\" id=\"c92198de-d820-4303-a0e4-b73cdd8a9316-link\">5<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Consider a heart-healthy diet:<\/strong> A popular choice is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-eating\/eat-smart\/nutrition-basics\/mediterranean-diet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mediterranean diet<\/a>, which incorporates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluekc.com\/blueprint\/community-and-culture\/why-is-everyone-talking-about-whole-foods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">whole foods<\/a> that are beneficial in reducing cardiovascular risk.
