Yet talking about suicide continues to be difficult and knowing what to say to someone in crisis can be fraught with fear of making things worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clancy Martin disagrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martin is a University of Missouri\u2013Kansas City philosophy professor and author of the book \u201cHow Not To Kill Yourself: A Portrait Of The Suicidal Mind.\u201d His book is part memoir of his own struggles with suicidal ideation and part practical advice for others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Martin believes there can be a positive impact on healing, hope, and recovery when people use their mass media platforms<sup>2<\/sup> to talk about suicide. That positive impact even has a name \u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/988lifeline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Lifeline-Papageno-Effect.pdf\">Papageno effect<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Papageno effect\u2026shows that if in the media we have conversations\u2026like an informed, rich, robust conversation about suicide \u2013 the suicide rate goes down; rates of suicidal ideation go down. The whole population has benefited just by us talking about it,\u201d said Martin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Let\u2019s get people talking about suicide<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talking about suicide is critical \u2013 to save lives, to raise awareness, to remove discomfort. One way you can help fuel conversation among your clients is with these suicide awareness and prevention resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a
