Today\u00a0we\u2019ll\u00a0deep dive\u00a0into the\u00a0<strong>\u202fprovider\u00a0network<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Basics\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is a provider network?<\/strong>\u202f&nbsp;Your Blue KC network is the group of providers and facilities you have access to for your healthcare. It includes primary care physicians, specialty physicians, hospitals, urgent care clinics, labs, X-ray providers, pharmacies, same-day surgery centers, and other healthcare professionals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is an in-network provider?<\/strong>\u202fAn in-network provider is a doctor, hospital or other healthcare professional that has an agreement with Blue KC to provide services to plan members for a set rate.&nbsp;Generally, Blue KC will pay a larger percentage of your healthcare costs when you use an in-network provider.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is an out-of-network provider?<\/strong>\u202fAn out-of-network provider is a hospital, pharmacy,&nbsp;physician&nbsp;or other medical service provider that does not have a network contract with Blue KC to provide healthcare services to members. Both non-participating providers and non-preferred providers are also referred to as out-of-network providers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Four Reasons to Stay In-Network<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though you may have access to out-of-network providers through your Blue KC plan, you benefit by choosing in-network providers.&nbsp;Here\u2019s&nbsp;why:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0Pay less for healthcare<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&nbsp;could&nbsp;pay less for healthcare in two ways when you use in-network providers:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lower rates \u2013 When an in-network provider\u00a0contracts with\u00a0Blue KC, they typically agree to charge lower rates than they would charge without insurance.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Coinsurance\/copayment \u2013 Once you meet your deductible,\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0pay just a\u00a0portion\u00a0of providers\u2019 charges in the form of coinsurance and\/or copayment.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s&nbsp;how it works:&nbsp;Let\u2019s&nbsp;say your in-network doctor charges a negotiated rate of $200 for an office visit, and your&nbsp;coinsurance&nbsp;is 10%.&nbsp;You\u2019ll&nbsp;pay just $20 after&nbsp;you\u2019ve&nbsp;met your&nbsp;deductible&nbsp;and Blue KC will pay the remaining $180*. By contrast,&nbsp;if you&nbsp;visit an out-of-network&nbsp;doctor,their&nbsp;rate may be higher, and your out-of-network coinsurance will be higher.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Why&nbsp;it&nbsp;matters.<\/em>\u202fThis is why you enrolled in health insurance \u2013 to pay less for healthcare. Depending on your plan\u2019s stated coverage, coinsurance for a provider visit may be as low as 10% and the&nbsp;copayment&nbsp;as low as $15 once you have met your deductible.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*Based on hypothetical 10% coinsurance for in-network&nbsp;provider.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Pay a lower deductible<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Health plans that cover in-network and out-of-network providers&nbsp;generally have&nbsp;separate deductible amounts for each. For instance, your in-network deductible may be $1,500 while your out-of-network deductible may be $3,000.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Why it matters.<\/em>\u202f The sooner you meet your\u00a0deductible,\u00a0the sooner you only pay coinsurance or copayment for provider services. By seeing in-network providers,\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0reach the lower in-network deductible far faster than the higher out-of-network deductible.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Pay a lower out-of-pocket limit<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your plan\u2019s out-of-pocket limit is the most&nbsp;you\u2019ll&nbsp;pay for covered services in a year. Once&nbsp;you\u2019ve&nbsp;reached the specified out-of-pocket limit, Blue KC pays covered services costs for the&nbsp;remainder&nbsp;of the&nbsp;plan&nbsp;year. Health plans that cover in- and out-of-network providers&nbsp;generally have&nbsp;separate out-of-pocket limits for each. For example, an out-of-pocket limit may be $2,500 for in-network providers and $12,500 for out-of-network providers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Why it matters.\u202f<\/em> When you meet your out-of-pocket limit, Blue KC pays for your remaining\u00a0covered services\u00a0for the year. This is when you realize the full value of\u00a0your health insurance investment. When you choose in-network providers,\u00a0you\u2019ll\u00a0reach the lower in-network limit faster and enjoy the benefit of cost coverage.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Avoid surprise and balance billing(s)<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Balance billing occurs when an out-of-network provider bills you for the difference between their rate and what Blue KC will pay, in addition to out-of-network cost-share (coinsurance\/copayment). Surprise billing is a form of balance billing and may occur when you receive an unexpected bill for services from an out-of-network provider.\u202fWhile&nbsp;the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/nosurprises\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>No Surprises Act<\/strong><\/a>\u202fmay&nbsp;assist&nbsp;in protecting against these billings, staying in-network can&nbsp;assist&nbsp;in avoiding&nbsp;additional&nbsp;charges.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Why it matters.<\/em>\u202fYou want to keep your healthcare bills as low as possible. Stay in-network and avoid&nbsp;additional&nbsp;amounts such as those charged through balance billing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Find Providers in Your Network<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&nbsp;haven\u2019t&nbsp;already, check your network to make sure your existing providers are in-network. When you need to see a new doctor, make your network one of your first stops before scheduling an appointment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blue KC makes finding providers in your network easy.
