On March 28, 2024, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), announced additional actions it is taking to help people maintain coverage as states continue Medicaid and Children\u2019s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) eligibility renewals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The special enrollment period (SEP) that became available on January 1, 2024, for individuals losing Medicaid or CHIP is now extended until November 30, 2024<\/strong>. It was previously extended through July 31, 2024. This extension is crucial to ensuring those who are leaving Medicaid or CHIP secure affordable, comprehensive coverage through the start of the next Open Enrollment Period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Those losing coverage can apply and enroll in a Marketplace plan as early as 60 days<\/a> before their Medicaid or CHIP coverage ends to avoid a gap in coverage.
