But even more important than the water we immerse ourselves in is the water we drink.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drinking water prevents dehydration, which can cause unclear thinking, mood change, kidney stones, headaches, dizziness, heart palpitations, low blood pressure, overheating, or heatstroke.\u202f&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe main reason to drink water \u2014 it keeps us alive. But we also need it to sweat. Without sweating, the body won\u2019t cool down, and this can lead to overheating or heatstroke,\u201d says Michael Duke, MD, Spira Care Lee\u2019s Summit.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CDC agrees, adding that water helps the body:\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep a normal temperature\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lubricate and cushion joints\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protect the spinal cord and other sensitive tissues\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eliminate waste from the body\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Get your fair share of water\u202f<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the body\u2019s hydration needs can be met through the water and beverages you drink. Even certain foods \u2014 especially those high in water content like lettuce (96% water), celery (95% water) and, of course, watermelon (91% water) \u2013 help keep you hydrated. But there will be times when you need more water, such as in hot climates, when physically active, or when sick.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While no fixed amount of water consumption applies to everyone, the consensus is to drink an average of six to eight glasses per day. Follow these tips to ensure you get your fair share of water\u2026everyday:\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Carry a water bottle everywhere you go and refill it frequently\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Freeze water bottles for ice-cold water when spending a day outside\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Replace other beverages with water\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning, before every meal, and before bed\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have a daily water goal and set reminders\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don\u2019t let dehydration go untreated\u202f<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you experience serious symptoms of dehydration, visit an urgent care center or contact your\u00a0primary care provider (PCP) immediately. If you don\u2019t have a PCP:\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Find one in your neighborhood<\/strong>\u202f<strong>\u2013<\/strong>\u202fVisit your member portal at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/members.bluekc.com\/find-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>MyBlueKC.com<\/strong><\/a>, select Find Care in the left column, then enter any of the following in the search bar: PCP, family medicine, internal medicine, general practice, or a specific provider name.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Enrolled in a Blue KC plan with Spira Care? \u2013\u202f<\/strong>Visit a Spira Care Center for advanced primary care services.
