But when detected early, the five-year survival rate for localized breast cancer is 99%<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mammogram &#8212; a low-dose X-ray of the breast that can detect breast changes before physical symptoms develop &#8212; is considered the gold standard for early detection and can lessen the need for\u00a0mastectomy\u00a0or chemotherapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Schedule your screening mammogram<\/strong><sup>3<\/sup><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now is always the best time to schedule your screening mammogram. Family history &#8212; such as whether you carry inherited gene mutation BRCA1 or BRCA2 &#8212; can play an important role in knowing and understanding risk.
