Scam alert: Phishing emails target licensed producers
An active phishing scam is targeting licensed insurance producers and other users of the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) licensing platform. This alert is based on an April 9 Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance bulletin.
What’s happening
- Fraudulent emails appear to be invoices or payment notices related to licensing activity.
- The emails include an attachment designed to look legitimate.
- Opening the attachment may install malware, compromise your credentials, lead to email account compromise or a broader network security risk.
What to watch for
- Unexpected or unsolicited invoice emails, especially those urging quick action.
- Email messages claiming to be from NIPR or licensing authorities that include attachments.
- Generic greetings, payment pressure, or email address inconsistencies.
Required actions
- DO NOT open attachments from suspicious or unexpected emails.
- DO NOT click links or attempt to “review” or “pay” the invoice.
- Report the email immediately using the “Report Phishing” or “Report Spam” button built into most major email platforms.
If you are unsure whether an email is legitimate, treat it as suspicious and report it using the “Report Phishing” or “Report Spam” button built into most major email platforms.
Important reminder
NIPR and regulatory agencies do not typically send invoices requiring immediate action via email attachments. When in doubt, always access licensing platforms directly by typing the official website into your browser rather than using links or attachments.
