2026 Blue KC Coaches With Character Honoree Josh Walker
Park Hill South High School Baseball and Softball Coach featured the month of April
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC) and the “C” You in the Major Leagues (CYITML) Foundation have announced Park Hill South High School baseball and softball coach, Josh Walker, as the Blue KC Coaches with Character honoree for the month of April.
For nearly 20 years, Walker has immersed himself on the diamond. An avid baseball and softball fan, he began his tenure at Park Hill South High School in 1998, as an assistant baseball coach before ultimately becoming the head coach of the baseball team in 2010. Prior to, in 2007, Walker also was named the head coach of the school’s softball team. It’s been a whirlwind journey, but has been extremely rewarding both on and off the field.
“My family is my most proud accomplishment,” said Walker. “My wife made me a much better coach when she told me to think of my players as my own kids. You can’t go wrong if you love your players.”
The accolades and milestones have piled up over the years. In softball, Walker’s teams have amounted to nearly 300 career wins, 7 conference titles, and a district title back in 2014. In baseball, his teams have accumulated more than 235 wins since he took over the head coaching reigns back in 2010.
“Those are all great things, and I cherish each one,” said Walker. “But the day-to-day coaching and working with kids is what I’m most proud of. The coaching staffs that I have been on, and had the privilege of working with, make my job very easy. I work with the BEST people!”
While coaching multiple sports can have its challenges, the similarities and overlap between baseball and softball are obvious. Walker has been able to successfully use methods, drills, practice habits, and in-game managerial strategies to help establish a strong foundation for both programs at Park Hill South High School.
“I think the best advice I give to my players is to enjoy the challenges of the sport,” said Walker. “The challenges teach you a lot about yourself and life. Coaching team sports is all about accountability to your teammates, and to yourself. Instilling standards in your players, and our team, holds them accountable to each other, and to themselves, which in turn strengthens the team overall.”
As Walker continues his coaching journey, he’s met with love and support from those in the community, school administrators, current and former players, as well as his family. It’s this type of positive reinforcement that pushes him to perform his best each and every day.

“Coach Walker is more than just a coach—he is a mentor, role model, and a source of inspiration for every child who steps on the field,” said Walker’s nominator, Bethany McCollum. “He instills confidence, discipline, respect, and a strong sense of teamwork in his players, and understands that the lessons learned through sports can shape lives, and he takes that responsibility to heart. His energy is contagious, and his enthusiasm fuels a love of the game in his players. He celebrates effort over outcome and character over championships. It’s rare to find someone who so effortlessly blends skill, compassion, and integrity.”
“The focus and determination to serve as a long-standing head coach for both the baseball and softball programs are phenomenal,” said Jenny Housley, Blue KC President. “Josh’s love for the game, as well as the Park Hill South community, stretches beyond the diamond. He has positively impacted and influenced countless lives and made life-long memories along the way. We are proud to recognize this well-deserving coach as our first Blue KC Coaches with Character honoree of the 2026 season.”
