It’s Pneumonia Season
Now that fall is here, it’s important to remember that pneumonia season typically coincides with the colder months of the year – from fall to early spring. While pneumonia is most prevalent during these months, it can occur at any time of the year. Factors such as age, underlying health conditions, and exposure to sick individuals can also increase the risk of developing pneumonia regardless of the season.
Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs, and it affects millions of people worldwide each year. The good news is pneumonia can often be prevented and can usually be treated. And you can lower your risk of pneumonia with immunizations and other healthy living practices.
According to the CDC, pneumococcal vaccinations are recommended for:
- Children younger than 5 years; and
- Adults 50 years or older.
Common symptoms of pneumonia include:
- Chest pain when breathing or coughing
- Altered mental status (confusion)
- Cough
- Fatigue (feeling tired)
- Fever or chills
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
- Shortness of breath
