Kansas City, MO. (November 3, 2016) — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (Blue KC) has been certified as a Gold Level Healthy KC company by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce Healthy KC Workplace Wellness Certification program.

Healthy KC is an initiative launched by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City in the spring of 2015, in collaboration with more than 100 area health and wellness organizations, businesses, government, and other sectors. The workplace wellness effort is one of five areas of focus for Healthy KC, along with active living, behavioral health, healthy eating, and tobacco use prevention and cessation.

The Healthy KC workplace wellness certification is based on four ‘pillars’ of health: nutrition, physical activity, tobacco cessation, and work/life integration. There are four levels of certification, based on a company’s level of achievement across the four pillars – Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Honorable Mention.

“This is the second year Blue KC has been honored with the Gold certification and we’re proud to provide a healthy environment for our employees and to be a part of the larger Healthy KC initiative that is creating a healthier Kansas City for all,” said Gregg Laiben, M.D., Blue KC, Vice President, Health Innovations.

“We’d also like to congratulate the 212 companies that were given the Healthy KC Workplace Wellness certification and encourage those who haven’t applied to start thinking about ways to make their workplaces healthier and apply in 2017,” Laiben added.

The certification process will be repeated each year, with the next round slated to open in early 2017. For more information, visit www.wearehealthykc.com or e-mail healthykc@kcchamber.com.
