Life event updates

Your Blue KC team is by your side through life’s excitement, twists and turns. While it’s most common to make changes to your plan during the annual open enrollment period, life events happen in between.

Life changes… we’re here to help

You’ve moved!

When you relocate to a new permanent mailing address, it’s important for Blue KC to update your address on file and ensure that you continue to receive important communication from us about updates to your plan.

To update your mailing address:

  • Contact your employer, so they can also update their internal records.
  • Your employer will then pass those changes over to us.

To make plan changes:

If you have relocated to an area that impacts the insurance options available to you, you may have the opportunity to change your plan type.

If you qualify, you may need to share documentation like a new rental agreement, deed, or mortgage with your employer that shows you have moved into a new plan area.

You can call our Customer Service team at the number listed on your ID card to see if your relocation allows for a plan change.

Marriage

Getting married may allow you to make changes to your Blue KC plan. When your employer offers plans that cover spouses and children, this qualifying life event lets you add your new spouse and any biological or stepchildren to your policy.

To initiate changes, you need to:

  • Notify your employer as soon as possible after your marriage date with the updates you would like to make.
  • You may be asked to provide documentation, such as a marriage certificate.

Your employer will tell you when coverage will begin for any added family member(s).

Divorce

When your spouse is included on your plan and you complete your divorce, you may be allowed to make changes to your Blue KC plan. This qualifying life event lets you remove your spouse and any biological or stepchildren from your plan.

To initiate changes, you need to:

  • Notify your employer as soon as possible once your divorce is finalized.
  • You may be asked to provide documentation, such as a divorce decree.

Your plan will be updated to reflect the effective date of the divorce.

Congratulations on your new addition!

Growing your family may allow you to make changes to your Blue KC plan. When your employer offers plans that cover children, this qualifying life event lets you add your new child, as well as any other biological or stepchildren not currently covered by your policy.

To initiate changes, you need to:

  • Notify your employer as soon as possible with the child’s birth or adoption date.
  • Your employer may ask for additional records that verify the dates associated with this update.

For pregnancies, the child will be retroactively added to your plan as of their birthday.

For adoption, the child will be retroactively added to your plan as of their adoption date.

They grow up so fast…

Children reaching the ages of 18 and 26 years old are responsible for managing a larger share of their healthcare choices. We’re outlining what to expect and consider as they reach these milestone birthdays.

Your child is turning 18 years old:

  • Children turning 18 are eligible to stay on the policyholder’s plan until the age of 26, but are also able to move to their own plan.
  • Due to health privacy laws, the policyholder and spouse on the plan will no longer be able to view claims and EOBs for their child online.
  • Those turning 18 can create their own member account with a unique email address.

An adult child on the policy is turning 26 years old:

  • Those turning 26 are no longer eligible to stay on the policyholder’s plan.
  • This qualifying life event allows them to enroll in a plan through their employer or purchase their own individual plan.
