In-Network Hospitals

Blue KC members have access to a wide range of hospitals across the region. Your level of coverage depends on the type of plan you’re enrolled in and the network it uses.

  • EPO plans require members to receive care exclusively from in‑network hospitals, except in emergencies.
  • PPO plans offer more flexibility, using in‑network hospitals is strongly encouraged to receive the highest level of coverage and keep out‑of‑pocket costs lower.

Because network participation varies by hospital, members are encouraged to check their plan’s network—BlueSelect Plus or Preferred‑Care Blue—to ensure they receive cost‑effective care.

For costs and further details of the coverage, including exclusions, any reductions or limitations and the terms under which the policy may be continued in force, see your insurance producer or write Blue KC.

BlueCard

Your Blue KC membership gives you a world of healthcare choices across the country and around the globe. You can stay covered using your BlueCard Network no matter where life takes you. You can easily navigate care and visit the full list of doctors and hospitals close to where you live and work, while also having access to emergency and urgent care when you’re away. Always carry your current Blue KC member ID card or access your card from MyBlueKC.com. In an emergency, go to the nearest hospital.

Dental

The Blue KC dental network offers thousands of access points for dental providers delivering convenience access along with cost savings. Blue KC dental members can visit any licensed dentist within the local or outside of the Blue KC service area networks. To receive the highest discounts and lowest cost sharing, members are encouraged to utilize providers available within the PPO network. Benefit levels are determined by the network designation of the provider.

Glossary of Health Insurance Terms

Explore the Blue KC glossary for clear, easy-to-understand definitions and examples of common health insurance terms. Keep in mind that your certificate or contract documents contain the official, legally binding definitions specific to your plan. Below are some of the key terms you’ll see often

A type of health plan where you receive healthcare services only from doctors, hospitals and specialists in your plan’s network. There is no out-of-network coverage except for emergency services. Non-emergency services received out-of-network are not covered.

A health insurance plan that offers members a preferred network of healthcare providers who provide services for predetermined fees. Members who choose to use an out-of-network provider will generally pay a larger portion of medical expenses. If you are a PPO member, you will need to check to see whether a provider is in-network or out-of-network. Also, check to see whether the provider is participating or non-participating in a Blue KC provider network. All non-participating providers are considered out-of-network. Visiting these types of providers could result in limited benefits.

A Qualified HighDeductible Health Plan is a health insurance plan with a higher deductible that meets IRS standards, allowing members to contribute to an HSA. The plan covers preventive care upfront, but all other services must be paid outofpocket until the deductible is met.

An HSA allows you to pay for qualified medical expenses with tax-free money. To qualify for an HSA, you must have a Qualified High-Deductible Health Plan, otherwise known as a QHDHP. In general, you can use the money in your HSA to pay for deductibles, copayments and other expenses not covered by your health plan, like dental or vision expenses. If you don’t use all the money in your account by the end of the year, don’t worry. The money rolls over from year to year. An HSA is also portable, so you can take it with you if you change employers.

The amount a member or group pays on a periodic basis for coverage as defined in the member’s health insurance certificate or contract.

The fixed amount (for example, $25) you pay for a covered healthcare service, usually when you receive the service. The amount can vary, depending on the provider and the type of healthcare service.

The amount you pay for services received before your health plan begins to pay. For example, if your deductible is $1,000, your health plan will not pay for covered services until you’ve paid $1,000 toward your covered healthcare expenses. Once your deductible is met, your health plan will begin to pay a portion of your covered healthcare.

The percentage of costs of a covered healthcare service you pay (for example, 20%) after you’ve paid your deductible.

Most benefit plans have an out-of-pocket maximum. If the total dollar amount that you have paid in deductibles, coinsurance, and in some cases copayments, reach this maximum amount in a calendar year, then Blue KC will pay 100 percent of the allowed charges for the remainder of the year.

This is a general overview of services and benefits offered to City of Kansas City Missouri employees. Because coverage details can vary, review your specific plan documents for accurate information. For details about your coverage, please refer to your Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC) by visiting MyBlueKC.com and clicking on Plan Benefits.

*Blue KC members enrolled in plans (without a Health Savings Account) with exclusive access to Spira Care Centers will have no additional cost for any appointment or service provided at a Spira Care Center. Blue KC members enrolled in a plan with a Health Savings Account or HSA eligible with exclusive access to Spira Care Centers will incur a charge for an office visit at a Spira Care Center. Once a member has met their deductible, any future primary care needs at a Spira Care Center are at no additional cost. Preventive services are covered at 100 percent. For costs and further details of the coverage, including exclusions, any reductions or limitations and the terms under which the policy may be continued in force, see your insurance producer or write Blue KC.

** Your health coverage through any of the Blue KC plans cannot be used for an on-the-job or work-related injury or illness.

*** All services provided at Spira Care Centers are based on your primary care needs only and must be ordered by a member of the Spira Care Team. This includes digital x-rays, routine labs and immunizations. Orders by a specialist or someone outside of the Care Center cannot be completed or fulfilled at Spira Care Centers.
