What Are Medicare Stars and What Do They Mean to You?

November 2, 2021

It’s Saturday night and you’re deciding where to eat. You quickly scan the online restaurant reviews to see who has a higher rating before making your decision. At a four-star restaurant you can expect an exceptional experience while a one-star restaurant may not be as desirable.

Did you know Medicare Advantage plans are rated to help you evaluate when choosing your Medicare healthcare coverage?

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) uses the Star Rating System (Star) to rate Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D plans on health and drug services. The rating system ranges from one star to five stars. More stars mean a better plan where you may get better care and better, faster customer service.

Blue KC is proud to offer Health Management Organization (HMO) plans with 4.5 out of 5 Stars for 2022 and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) with 4 out of 5 Stars for 2022.

Medicare Advantage plans are evaluated based on how well they perform on up to 38 unique quality and performance measures in these general categories:

  • Staying healthy: access to screenings, tests, and vaccines
  • Managing chronic conditions
  • Timely and accurate responsiveness
  • Handling member complaints
  • Customer service
  • Member experience

Medicare updates these ratings each year before the annual election period, which runs from October 15 to December 7. Ratings can change each year.

In addition to comparing total cost for care, provider choice and benefits, the Overall Star Rating is a tool you can use to easily compare plans. We understand finding the right coverage can be confusing, so our licensed Medicare experts are available to answer your questions and guide you through the consideration process.
