Last summer marked the beginning of Well Stocked, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City’s (Blue KC) signature community impact program dedicated to increasing access to nutritious food in underserved areas of Kansas City. The launch
of Well Stocked represented a new chapter in Blue KC’s commitment to the health and wellbeing of our community and thrives on strong partnership programs that support finding ways to make sure everyone knows where their next meal is coming from.
Since the inception of Well Stocked in July, we have partnered with several wonderful organizations in our region. We are honored to be adding to that roster as we embark on a new partnership with the West Central Missouri Community Action Agency (WCMCAA). The WCMCAA is a pillar of our community – serving low-
income individuals and families in 16 Missouri counties through a variety of direct services to help them achieve self-sufficiency.
Through this new partnership, Well Stocked will provide funding to WCMCAA in support of their mission. Our partnership will help support the improvement of food systems in rural areas in innovative ways through programs like WCMCAA’s Food and Agriculture Regional Enterprise Center and its West Central Community Farm, which grows and provides crops to help food insecure families in the West Central Missouri region.
Nationwide, rural areas face an even higher likelihood of hunger than metropolitan areas – in fact, three quarters of the nation’s counties with the highest rates of food insecurity are in rural areas, and 86 percent of counties with the highest rates of food insecurity among children are in rural areas.
Our partner organizations in Well Stocked mean so much to the success of our program. Together, we’ve formed a strong coalition dedicated to the goal that no person in our community suffer from hunger. With WCMCAA, our impact grows that much stronger.
